The (left) arm of the franchise

Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana was scheduled for an MRI on Monday, March 2; however, the team canceled the procedure after the left-hander threw a successful bullpen session Sunday morning.

Santana was scratched from his scheduled spring training debut on Tuesday and was officially shut down by Manager Jerry Manuel last Friday, prior to a potential exhibition appearance against the Italian World Baseball Classic team.

According to David Lennon, of Newsday, concerns were first raised when Santana reported "tightness in his left elbow," while warming up before the Friday morning exhibition.

The Mets announced Sunday morning, just before his bullpen session, that Santana would fly to New York for an examination with the team's medical director, David Altchek.

Santana told MLB.com writer Marty Noble that the tightness "was in his triceps tendon."

Although a significant concern, Santana told Noble that he expects to be ready for his opening day start in Cincinatti, April 6.
